Mon 15 November 2010 from 18:30 to 20:30

There are 20 slots to fill.  Those selected will go into an anthology for the night.  But even if you don’t win a slot, we will try our best to put all our contributors into the anthology anyway.  (This is a one-off opportunity.)  There will be folk music and a glass of wine available in the interval.
We welcome poems: max 30 lines; extracts from prose work (400 words); and script (that can be condensed into three pages); also pictures/visuals that enhance the text. Contributions should be your own unpublished work.

Email no more than 3 poems or a couple of pieces of prose, and perhaps a     couple of lines about yourself. Avoid formatting.  Single space and put your
name at the end of each poem.  Send as an attachment or in the body of     the email.

We also need ‘listeners.’  Come along. Listening to poetry is as much of a creative act as writing it.  We need your contribution, too!

Tyneside 15th November
One of Tyneside's biggest ever poetry events takes place on Monday November 15th, 7.30pm  at The Hyena Comedy Cafe, with the launch celebration of The IRON Book of New Humorous Verse. This international anthology highlights the growth in performance poetry and more than thirty of its 62 poets will be there to read their contributions to the book.

Middlesbrough to Morpeth, Wylam to Whitley Bay, local poets, including Amanda Baker, Andy Croft, Linda France, Joan Johnston, Valerie Laws, Pauline Plummer and Jeff Price are flying in from every corner of our region, while Julie Kane, a Professor of English from Louisiana, USA is travelling a mere 4,000 miles and another long-distance traveller is Mo Ryan from Galway in Ireland. An impressive cohort venturing up from the capital includes the amazing John Hegley; Steve Tasane (former poet in residence at Battersea Dogs’ Home); radio presenter Murray Shelmerdine and the multi-talented Edinburgh Fringe poetry award winner, Nandita Ghose. Cumbrian artist/Glastonbury Festival performer Gill Hands, and David Bateman (Liverpool Poetry Slam Champion 2007) are among those riding in from the Wild West and the anthology’s battery of Yorkshire based talent will be well represented by poet and musician Christine Bousfield, and seasoned Edinburgh performer Helen Burke.

Peter Mortimer, IRON Press's silver-tongued, silver-haired and silver-trousered editor, will be there to MC the event and enforce a light hearted, celebratory and supportive atmosphere for all, including less experienced poetry performers. As ever, he’ll overcome his Notts County roots, allegiance and diction to extend a warm Tyneside welcome to visitors from near and distant parts (and Sunderland).

With live music support from The Creels. The event is booking fast - tickets (£5 including buffet) from Hyena Comedy Café tel 0191 2326030.

There are also a few places left on the workshop John Hegley is running on the same day, 2 -4pm on Monday 15th November, at Morden Tower – contact ironanthology@btinternet.com  for workshop details and booking.

Writing Workshop Competition

The Workshop:
This is an exercise in the use of different narrative points-of-view.

Write a short piece, prose or poetry, in which you describe the same event using two or three
different narrative point-of-views – first-person (‘I opened the door’), second-person (‘You
open the door’) or third-person/omniscient narrator (‘Mary opened the door’). You can write
it in any tense you choose and you’re welcome to attempt variants on these three conventions,
eg. first-person plural.
Try to consider how the descriptions of the event will differ according to your chosen narrative
voice – how an omniscient narrator can be privy to information that a first-person narrator
may not be aware of; how first-person narrative needs to inhabit a specific character and to
accurately reflect their voice, their actions and reactions; how third-person narrative can be
used to pass objective comments on events and characters; how the rare and difficult second person
perspective can be used to draw in the reader. Crucially, bear in mind that the same
event can seem vastly different from one point-of-view to the next.

The Competition:
Send us a short poem (20 lines or fewer) or up to 300 words inspired by this writing exercise.

The winning entry will be published in the next edition of the Leaf Writers’ Magazine, and the winner will receive £75 and a free
copy of the magazine.

To enter: £3 per entry, 4 entries for £10.
You’re entitled to one free competition entry if you’ve bought the magazine.

Call For Submissions: Tearoom Books’ Latest Chapbook... Recipes & Poems Required

To be entitled Reader Digest, this e-chapbook will differ slightly in format from the usual poetry journals: we ask that in addition to a poem, each poet will also submit a recipe that in one way or the other ties in with, relates, or speaks to the poem. The duo of poem and recipe will then be considered as one work with its own particular flavour(s). Please note, the poem does not necessarily need to refer explicitly to the recipe or be food-related, though it should offer some form of sustenance.

We are particularly interested in light verse, flowery or floury, and ask that your poem be relatively short (no more than 15 lines) and that your recipe measurements (if needed) follow the Metric system. Ideally, we would like 2-3 poems to choose from.

Abridged 0 – 22: Nostalgia is a Loaded Gun

Submission Call

'You cannot say, or guess, for you know only

A heap of broken images, where the sun beats

And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief' (L21-23 The Wasteland)

We have built an entire economy on the enigmatic pull of nostalgia, on that 'heap of broken images' that intersect like shattered glass on our consciousness. The recent burial of said economy is proof of the flimsy, fickle nature of nostalgia. Nostalgia is a 'dead tree' that we cling to in desperate hope that some kernel of a longed for but ancient reality will drop from it. It is a cyanide pill that offers us no hope of touching what it is that we have lost. It is the air breathed by the past, whispered in our ears on frosty November nights. It promises reprieve but delivers nothing we can touch. It cannot be trusted. It cannot be believed. Nostalgia is a loaded gun.
